Windows Backup Options Explained

Windows offers file history, cloud sync and system images.

File backup

Use the built-in backup features to copy documents and folders to an external drive or cloud storage.

Cloud sync

Folder sync keeps files available across devices, but sync is not a true backup because deletions sync too.

System image

Creates a snapshot of the whole system for restoring after a failure.

Recommendation

Combine regular file backup to an external drive with an encrypted cloud copy.

Key takeaway: Sync is not backup. Keep a separate copy that does not follow deletions.
