How to Secure Your Home Router in 10 Minutes

Every device in your home connects through your router, yet many people never change its settings. A short check can close the most common weaknesses.
1. Change the admin login
Replace the default admin username and password with a unique, strong password. Default logins are widely known.
2. Update the firmware
Check your router’s admin page or app for updates, and turn on automatic updates if available. If the router no longer receives updates, replace it.
3. Use WPA3 or WPA2 with a strong Wi-Fi password
Choose WPA3 if all devices support it, otherwise WPA2-AES. Use a long, random Wi-Fi password.
4. Turn off risky features
- Disable WPS, which can be brute-forced.
- Disable remote administration unless you need it.
- Disable UPnP if you do not use it.
5. Create a guest network
Put visitors and smart home gadgets on a separate network so they cannot reach your computers.
6. Rename the network
Avoid names that reveal your family name or router model.
7. Check connected devices
Look at the device list occasionally, and remove anything you do not recognise.
