How to Securely Delete Files and Wipe Old Drives

Deleted files can often be recovered. Proper wiping prevents it.

Everyday deletion

Deleting a file usually only removes the pointer to it. The data stays until overwritten.

Before selling or recycling

  • Back up what you need.
  • Sign out of accounts and remove the device from your cloud account.
  • Use the factory reset with encryption enabled so the key is destroyed.
  • For hard drives, use a trusted wiping tool; for SSDs, rely on encryption and secure erase.

Physical destruction

For drives with highly sensitive data that cannot be wiped, physical destruction is the safest option.

Key takeaway: Encrypt first, then reset or wipe. Never hand over a device with data still on it.
